2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4×4 Test: Improving an Old Faithful

The midsize Jeep SUV’s carryover V-6 shines brighter in this all-new, lighter Grand Cherokee.

Pros

  • Superior off-road capability
  • More agile on-road handling
  • Upscale interior materials, strong Uconnect system

Cons

  • Aging Pentastar V-6 engine

  • So-so active safety aids

The fifth-generation 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee takes an already strong and storied nameplate and ups the ante yet again for competitors in the midsize SUV segment. We first set eyes on the latest-generation Grand Cherokee last year when the family expanded to a new three-row version Jeep calls the Grand Cherokee L, which allowed it to compete in the heart of the family hauler market. We were impressed with the interior’s high-end materials and thoughtful touches as we waited for the traditional two-row Grand Cherokee to break cover.

Now that it has, we’ve gotten our hands on one for a proper test.

WL-Y Nice To Meet You, Two-Row Grand Cherokee

The newest WL-generation model is still instantly recognizable as a Grand Cherokee, but it has a wider track, longer hood, lower center of gravity, and is more aerodynamic. Not surprisingly, it also gets a sumptuously appointed interior tailored for a vehicle that is equally at home in the suburbs or the middle of nowhere after a day on the trails.

Jeep offers the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee across a wide spectrum, offering some of the best on- and off-road driving in the midsize SUV segment; in essence, there is a version for every buyer. The family is anchored by the entry-level Laredo, followed by the nicer Limited, then the richer Overland, off-road-focused Trailhawk, more luxurious Summit, and range-topping Summit Reserve with a V-8.

There is also the new plug-in hybrid Grand Cherokee 4xe, which is available as a powertrain upgrade on Limited, Overland, and Summit trims. For 2023, the Trailhawk model is only available with the 4xe gas-electric powertrain. Each step up offers more features, both standard and optional.

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Still Masters Off-Road

For this latest generation, the expected off-road chops are only amplified. The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee still offers three 4WD systems. Designers were careful to retain approach and departure angles with higher-clearance bodywork than is typical while giving the SUV up to 11.3 inches of ground clearance and 24 inches of water-fording ability. The 2022 model also adds a new front-axle disconnect feature that will automatically revert to rear-wheel drive if the vehicle senses road conditions that don’t require all-wheel drive.

The Limited tested here has the single-speed (i.e., no low-range gearing) Quadra-Trac I system and active transfer case to send torque to the wheel with the most grip. Although it is the starter kit of the three available 4WD systems, it tackled an off-road course with ease.

Engine choices are less new. The V-6 and V-8 engines are carryovers from the previous Grand Cherokee, though their days are likely numbered given the introduction of the new Hurricane I-6 engine family that provides more power and efficiency and is, well, new. The Hurricane debuts in the full-size, long-wheelbase 2022 Jeep Wagoneer L and Jeep Grand Wagoneer L but will work its way into future vehicles in the lineup, including the stubbier non-L Wagoneers, soon.

Popular Choice: Jeep Grand Cherokee With V-6

We tested a 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4×4 with the hard-working 3.6-liter Pentastar engine, a naturally aspirated powertrain that puts out 293 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. This trim and engine are the sweet spot for many Grand Cherokee buyers. And that is saying something given the many choices.

The trusty Pentastar V-6—now a decade old—supplies plenty of grunt and still sounds sonorous as it revs up and distributes power via the eight-speed automatic transmission. In fact, it overperforms for a carryover mill. “I don’t remember this engine being this peppy,” said road test editor Chris Walton. Well, the V-6 has help: The 2022 Grand Cherokee drops about 250 pounds.

We saw 60 mph arrive in 7.3 seconds and the quarter-mile passed by in 15.5 seconds at 89.8 mph. A 2014 Grand Cherokee Limited with the same V-6 that we tested needed 7.7 seconds to reach 60 mph, and was 0.3-second slower through the quarter-mile.

But acceleration can be jerky at times and efficiency lags the competition, at 19 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 22 mpg combined. That leaves a lot of room for improvement if Jeep substitutes the mild-hybrid Hurricane engine. If anything, the Grand Cherokee 4xe plug-in hybrid available now is a more accurate representation of where the nameplate is going.

Improving Grand Cherokee On-Road Prowess

This is also the best-riding and best-handling Grand Cherokee ever. We were initially excited at the prospect of the fifth-generation using the Giorgio platform that underpins the delightful-to-drive Alfa Romeo Stelvio and now the Maserati Grecale crossovers.

But Jeep engineers reckoned that although Giorgio had a lot to offer on paved roads, it would compromise the off-road ability a Jeep demanded. In the end, the WL ended up on a new platform designed to accommodate internal combustion engines, plug-in hybrids, and pure EVs in the future. The new platform retains Jeep off-road capability, but Alfa engineers helped tune the SUV for a livelier on-road experience.

We found that the SUV’s suspension absorbs uneven surfaces well—especially impressive given that the Limited has steel springs while higher trims have air suspension—with no more than the expected amount of head toss and body roll for a large SUV.

(The previous-generation, non-air-suspended Grand Cherokees could be kind of a mess over undulating road surfaces, so it’s great to see such improvement in the standard setup.) Steering is nicely weighted, although it can feel like a lot of work on a winding road. There is a nice array of drive modes—Auto, Sport, Snow, and Sand/Mud.

The Grand Cherokee behaved predictably for a big SUV, with noticeable brake dive during hard stops, plenty of body roll, and understeer at the handling limit, said tester Walton, who also noted that convincing the transmission to lend you a downshift requires stomping hard on the gas. Halting the Jeep from 60 mph required 142 feet, the second-worst stopping distance in a large field of SUVs tested.

The substantially heavier, all-electric Cadillac Lyriq electric SUV was the only vehicle with a longer stopping distance. Even the huge full-size Jeep Wagoneer L and Jeep Grand Wagoneer L performed better than the smaller and lighter Grand Cherokee.

For those keen on using active-safety tech to lighten their mental load on a road trip, the active lane management system offers three degrees of steering assist, but this is an aid, not a fully corrective lane-centering system. Conversely, adaptive cruise control works well and holds the set speed precisely down a long and steep hill. Jeep also offers conventional cruise control.

Step Inside The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Despite its ground clearance, the Grand Cherokee is not hard to get in and out of and there are height-adjustable seatbelts, which many pricier vehicles lack, and which are a critical feature for the short-statured.

Our five-passenger Limited came with a black-and-tan interior with lovely dark wood trim underlined with chrome accents. It is filled with a wide array of safety and comfort features, including heating for the steering wheel as well as the front and rear seats. The cabin is comfortable and quiet, even at high speeds.

We like how the infotainment touchscreen cascades down nicely from the top of the dash, and Uconnect 5 is a great system. It’s easy to use with dedicated hard buttons, it connects easily with devices, the graphics are crisp, and it is feature-rich and customizable in a way that is well-organized and intuitive.

There is an angled shelf for phones, with USB and power outlets. Rear passengers have a fold-down armrest with two cupholders. Their seats are heated and there are four USB ports. The seats fold flat and there is a large rear cargo area.

Our Limited test vehicle came to $52,250 with options, a short throw from its $48,440 base price. This model included $1,075 for Uconnect 5 Nav with the 10.1-inch touchscreen display (up from the standard 8.4-inch screen), GPS navigation with traffic services, and an upgraded audio system.

For another $1,645, Jeep throws in 20-inch painted aluminum wheels and all-season tires. The Baltic Gray Metallic clear coat costs extra, as does the Trailer Tow Prep Group with trailer-hitch zoom, headlamp leveling, rear load-leveling suspension, and a full-size spare tire.

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4x4 4

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited, even with the entry-level V-6, should continue to be a popular choice, offering a lot of metal for the money. There is a Grand Cherokee for everybody, though. Whether the V-8 or a hybrid strikes your fancy, or greater off-road prowess is in the cards, you can find a Grand Cherokee that works amidst the wide spectrum of trim levels, all of which take the Jeep’s winning formula and make it better.

9/10C/D RATING
2022 jeep grand cherokee summit reserve 4xe front exterior
  • HIGHS: Ruggedly handsome styling, generous standard safety tech, posh cabin on high-end models.
  • LOWS: All-wheel drive isn’t standard, top trims are more expensive than outgoing model, thirsty optional V-8.
  • VERDICT: The new Grand Cherokee is improved in nearly every way, but the upcharge for the Jeep brand name may turn off value-oriented buyers.

Overview

When you close your eyes and think of a Jeep, it’s likely that the rough-and-tumble Wrangler comes to mind, but the Grand Cherokee is every bit as important to the success of the famed off-road brand in terms of sales. Its appeal is bolstered by the fact that it pairs impressive off-road capability with on-road refinement, offers lots of available luxury appointments and features, and has the rugged, outdoorsy look Jeep buyers love.

We like it too, in fact, and gave it an Editors’ Choice award. A trio of powertrains are offered, including familiar V-6 and V-8 options and a new plug-in-hybrid variant that Jeep calls 4xe. While rear-wheel drive is standard on models with the V-6, there are no less than three different all-wheel-drive systems available to help tackle whatever your lifestyle requires, whether that’s simply commuting through snowy weather or crawling rocks in Moab.

What’s New for 2022?

For the 2021 model year, Jeep launched a new generation of the Grand Cherokee, but it only offered the new model as a the L three-row variant (reviewed separately) alongside the previous-generation, two-row GC. For the 2022 model year, the Grand Cherokee sheds its old bones with the introduction of a two-row body style riding atop the new architecture. Curiously, Jeep is still selling the previous generation—dubbed Grand Cherokee WK—through the 2022 model year.

The Grand Cherokee starts thousands higher than rivals such as the Kia Telluride and the Hyundai Palisade–consider it the Jeep tax–and its higher trims are priced similarly to some luxury SUVs. That being said, we think the Limited model represents the best mix of features, besting the base Laredo with more equipment to satisfy luxury buyers.

The Limited comes standard with leather upholstery, a power-operated rear liftgate, heated front and rear seats, power-adjustable front seats, interior ambient lighting, automatic high-beam headlamps, remote start, and more. We’d spring for the Entertainment Group package, which adds the larger 10.1-inch infotainment display and a nine-speaker Alpine stereo.

We’d also choose the Lux Tech Group II package, with rain-sensing windshield wipers, a wireless phone charger, perforated leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, a power-adjustable steering column, a digital rearview mirror, second-row sunshades, a 360-degree exterior camera system, front and rear parking sensors, and a collision avoidance feature that helps when traveling through intersections.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Like the last generation Grand Cherokee, the new one is powered by either a 3.6-liter V-6 or a 5.7-liter Hemi V-8. Jeep also offers its plug-in-hybrid 4xe powertrain that introduces electrification to its family SUV. Rear-wheel drive is standard with the base V-6, but all-wheel drive is standard on Grand Cherokees with the V-8 or plug-in-hybrid powertrain. Several different all-wheel-drive systems are available, including an electronically locking limited-slip differential.

A Trailhawk model with more robust off-road equipment and greater capability is available, too, and it features an adjustable air suspension that provides up to 11.3 inches of ground clearance and a disconnecting sway bar that allows greater wheel articulation for tackling difficult terrain. During our initial test drive, we were impressed with the Grand Cherokee’s composed, smooth ride and found both the V-6 and V-8 engines to be plenty perky.

At our test track, our V-6–powered Summit test vehicle managed a respectable 7.4-second run to 60 mph; the off-road oriented Trailhawk completed the same test in 7.7 seconds.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

Fuel economy estimates for the V-6–powered Grand Cherokee are typical of the mid-size SUV segment at 19 mpg city and 26 mpg highway when paired with rear-wheel drive. Adding all-wheel drive drops each of those estimates by 1 mpg; the V-8 model is rated for 14 mpg city and 22 mpg highway. The plug-in hybrid 4xe should deliver better fuel economy but the EPA has not released estimates for that model yet.

Models with the 4xe plug-in-hybrid powertrain come with a 14.0-kWh battery pack and a 134-hp electric motor that allows the Grand Cherokee to cruise for up to 25 miles per charge. Jeep boasts that the Grand Cherokee with the 4xe powertrain completed the famed Rubicon Trail entirely in its EV driving mode. For more information about the Grand Cherokee’s fuel economy, visit the EPA’s website.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

A thoroughly modernized cabin replaces the outgoing Grand Cherokee’s somewhat dated interior. While base Laredo models offer the essentials, upscale Summit and Overland trims will add luxuries like quilted leather upholstery, open-pore wood trim, and high-tech digital displays. The Grand Cherokee is strictly a two-row SUV, but buyers seeking a third row can upgrade to the Grand Cherokee L, which we review separately. We haven’t had a chance to test the new Grand Cherokee yet, but we expect it to accommodate more of our carry-on suitcases than the previous generation model.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Floating just above the surface of the Grand Cherokee’s dashboard is either an 8.4- or 10.1-inch touchscreen with standard Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and SiriusXM satellite radio. In-dash navigation with real-time traffic and weather updates is optional, and higher-end models can be had with a digital gauge cluster, a 10.0-inch head-up display, and another 10.3-inch display embedded into the dashboard for use by the front-seat passenger.

While the Laredo and Limited models ship with a standard six-speaker stereo, buyers are able to upgrade to either a nine-speaker Alpine audio setup or a high-end 19-speaker McIntosh arrangement.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

Driver-assistance features such as pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assist, and semi-autonomous driving modes are becoming increasingly important to shoppers, and Jeep is delivering a more comprehensive suite of standard safety tech to satisfy that demand. For more information about the Grand Cherokee’s crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Key safety features include:

  • Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
  • Standard lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist
  • Standard adaptive cruise control

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

One of the few things that hasn’t changed with the 2022 Grand Cherokee will be its standard warranty package. Rivals such as the Telluride and the Hyundai Santa Fe both offer longer terms here, but the Jeep’s warranty lines up with most other rivals, including the Chevrolet Blazer and the Ford Edge.

  • Limited warranty covers 3 years or 36,000 miles
  • Powertrain warranty covers 5 years or 60,000 miles
  • Three years of complimentary scheduled maintenance is included
