2023 Genesis GV60 SUVOTY Review: Better Than the Ioniq 5 or EV6?

No quarter was granted for the GV60 at SUV of the Year.

2023 Genesis GV60 16

Pros

  • Genesis designers had fun with this one
  • 800-volt architecture = seriously quick charging
  • It’s fun!

Cons

  • Interior quality a mixed bag
  • More expensive than its Hyundai/Kia siblings but not notably better
  • Limited availability

At most big, full-line automakersā€”say, GM, VW, or Toyotaā€”it’s easy for the luxury brands to stand out from their mainstream counterparts. The luxe variants usually have more power, more advanced technology, and more upscale interiors. Here, Hyundai Motor Group doesn’t grant its luxury arm, Genesis, that grace. The undeniable strength of theĀ Hyundai Ioniq 5Ā andĀ Kia EV6ā€”the former a design benchmark and the latter a performance standoutā€”have givenĀ the related 2023 Genesis GV60 no quarter.

On paper, the GenesisĀ  GV60 seems well-suited to go up against its siblings. It rides on the same Electric Global Modular Platform as the EV6 and Ioniq 5 (though it sports the shortest wheelbase of the trio), features a 77.4-kWh battery pack good for up to 248 miles of range, and in top-trim GV60 Performance guise sports a combined 429 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque, more than any Ioniq 5 or EV6, save for the EV6 GT. It even charges quickly, going from 10 to 80 percent in as little as 18 minutes, thanks to its 235-kW peak charge rate.

But Hyundai and Kia offer the same 77.4-kWh battery pack and can clear 266 miles and 274 miles when equipped with dual motors. They also match the GV60’s charge times and the Advanced version’s power output, plus they’re cheaper. The Ioniq 5 costs $56,295 when comparably equipped to the $59,985 base GV60, and the equivalent EV6 is $57,965. The other two are more widely available, as well; the Genesis is currently sold in just eight states.

If the GV60 had any hopes to advance, it was via performance and styling. Regarding the former, the Genesis has the softest ride of its compatriots. On highway surfaces and city streets, that’s a boon. “On the highway, the GV60 drove the best,” guest judge Gordon Dickie said. “It readily absorbed expansion joints with little to no head toss or tire slap.” Some judges even thought the GV60 did a decent hot hatch impression when driven hard, though others lamented poor body control for a luxury SUV equipped with adaptive dampers.

2023 Genesis GV60 1

The GV60 was initially successful on the design front. “Credit must be given to the Genesis designers,” associate editor Alex Leanse said. “Details like the glove box drawer, mirror adjustment pod and matching diffuser, and shift dial all function exactly as well as they should while adding style and distinction.” Editorial director Ed Loh agreed: “Hyundai Motor Group’s design team is clearly having the most fun in the automotive industry.

I love the drama, beauty, and elegance of the GV60’s interior. I like the show of the shifter, the way it rotates to go from a crystal to a beautiful dial, and the awesome blue leather with the contrast lime green stitching and piping.”

But start poking around, and, well, other Genesis models like theĀ 2022 SUV of the Year-winning GV70Ā wouldn’t be caught dead with Hyundai or Kia switchgear, yet it’s prevalent in the GV60’s cabin. And although the orb shifter and other baubles distract the eye, some of the silver and gray plastic buttons look and feel cheap. Ultimately, as strong as the Genesis GV60 is, its siblings are simply stronger. The GV60 is an appealing electric luxury SUV, but you give up little to nothing by opting for the Kia or Hyundai.

8.5/10C/D RATING
2023 genesis gv60
  • HIGHS: Off-beat design, athletic driving demeanor, punchy electric powertrain.
  • LOWS: Some rivals offer more range, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto don’t work wirelessly, Hyundai and Kia models offer similar performance for less money.
  • VERDICTGenesis’s first stab at a luxury EV SUV has pierced right through to the heart of that growing market.

Overview

The ambitious Genesis luxury brand is tackling the luxury EV segment with its satisfying and whimsicalĀ 2023 GV60 crossover. The GV60 incorporates styling elements found inĀ other Genesis models, but it lacks the brand’s large trapezoidal grille that stretches between the dual-element headlamps, substituting a slimmer lower grille across the front bumper.

Inside, the GV60’s cabin looks decidedly premium, with a large monolithic display screen serving as both gauge cluster and infotainment system and a novel crystal sphere shifter that rotates to reveal itself when the SUV is powered up.

At launch, buyers can choose from the 314-hp Advanced or 429-hp Performance trims; estimated driving range varies from 235- to 248-miles per charge. Rival luxury SUVs such as theĀ Audi Q4 e-tron, theĀ Volvo XC40 Recharge, and theĀ coupe-like C40 RechargeĀ offer similar prestige and driving range, but the GV60’s detail-oriented design and amusing flourishes make it an attractive and off-beat alternative.

What’s New for 2023?

The GV60 is a new model for Genesis and the brand’s third SUV. It’s also the brand’s first foray into the electric vehicle marketplace and it shares its underpinnings with theĀ Hyundai Ioniq 5Ā and theĀ Kia EV6.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

Advanced
$60,385
Performance
$69,385

While we’re tempted by the Performance trimā€”which unlocks a maximum of 483-hp from it’s two electric motorsā€”the better buy is the Advanced trim. While the Advanced only makes 314 hp, it also comes with a slightly longer 248-mile driving range and still comes generously equipped with 20-inch wheels, a Bang & Olufsen stereo system, heated and ventilated front seats, and a host of driver-assistance features, among many others.

EV Motor, Power, and Performance

Although three different powertrains will eventually be offered, only the all-wheel-drive arrangements with dual motors will be available at the GV60’s launch. The Advanced model makes a combined 314 hp while the Performance trim makes 429 hp; that number can be temporarily increased to 483 horsepower though when the Performance model’s Boost driving mode is engaged.

With that driving mode in use, we launched the GV60 Performance toĀ 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds. The GV60’s road manners are quite refined and its handling is reminiscent of the Porsche Macan. When cruising, the cabin remains whisper quiet but encounter a stretch of winding road and the GV60 offers enough athleticism to entertain the driver and enough sure-footedness to inspire confidence.

Range, Charging, and Battery Life

All versions come with the same 77.4-kWh battery pack, but according to the EPA the all-wheel drive GV60 Advanced will offer up to 248 miles of driving range while the Performance model carries an estimate of 235. A base rear-wheel drive powertrain is rumored to join the lineup later with a longer driving range. Hooked up to a DC fast charging station, Genesis says the GV60’s battery can be charged from 10- to 80-percent capacity in just 18 minutes. On our 75-mph highway fuel economy test route, the GV60 Performance provided an observed driving range of 200 miles.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPGe

The most efficient GV60 model right now is the all-wheel drive Advanced trim which is EPA rated for up to 103 MPGe city and 86 MPGe highway. The Performance trim is rated for 97 MPGe city and 82 MPGe highway. For more information about the GV60’s fuel economy, visitĀ the EPA’s website.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

As the smallest SUV in the Genesis lineup, the GV60 isn’t as spacious as the larger GV70 and GV80 models. However, it offers a unique interior design that’s more high-tech in its appearance. Genesis has taken some chances here and integrated some cool motifs and features, including a gear selector that flips upside down when in park and has the appearance of a crystal ball.

The GV60 also boasts some novel tech, such as a facial recognition system that allows the owner to unlock and start the vehicle without needing a key. Other biometric tech such as fingerprint readers are also incorporated into the SUV’s design.

Infotainment and Connectivity

All GV60 models come with a large 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen that shares a panel with an identically-sized 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both included, although neither works wirelessly. The Genesis infotainment system works well enough and can be controlled via a clickwheel on the center console if touching the screen itself is too far of a reach. A Bang & Olufsen stereo system is standard, which is a nice feature that most rivals would charge extra for.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

A full suite of driver-assistance features is standard on every GV60 model, including automated emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control. For more information about the GV60’s crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Key safety features include:

  • Standard automated emergency braking
  • Standard lane-keeping assist with lane-departure warning
  • Standard adaptive cruise control with a lane-centering feature

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

The Genesis brand offers excellent warranty coverage that stretches for far longer than most other premium automakers. The GV60 comes with powertrain coverage for up to 10 years or 100,000 miles and complimentary scheduled maintenance for three years or 36,000 miles. TheĀ Jaguar I-PaceĀ offers similar bumper-to-bumper coverage and longer complimentary maintenance, but the powertrain policy is nearly half that of the Genesis’s.

  • Limited warranty covers 5 years or 60,000 miles
  • Powertrain warranty covers 10 years or 100,000 miles
  • Complimentary maintenance is covered for 3 years or 36,000 miles
