In March of this year, Chevy announced its first high performance all-electric vehicle, which will resurrect name from the not-so-distant past: Get ready for the upcoming 2024 Chevrolet Blazer SS EV. Apparently Chevy has been taking note of its competition, packaging its first sporty EV in a crossover body and slapping an iconic (or at least well-known) brand nameplate on it, just like what Ford did with the Mustang Mach-E. If it worked for Ford, maybe it’ll work here, too.

After teasing the new Blazer SS in a short video clip posted to the brand’s social media channels depicting a red vehicle’s charge port in the front fender, with a cable plugged in, GM has opened the floodgates with a full-frontal photo of the new electric crossover and confirmed its reveal date: July 18, 2022.

Details are still scarce for now, but GM exec Mark Reuss previously said an upcoming Blazer EV would be “an affordable, high-volume entry,” in an investor call last year. CEO Mary Barra, in a tweet shown above, promises full information will come July 18.

The current Chevy Blazer is a conventional crossover with Camaro-inspired styling and either a turbocharged inline-4 cylinder making 288 horsepower, or a naturally-aspirated V-6 making 308 horsepower. It’s unlikely that the new SS EV model will have anything to do with today’s Blazer; rather the 2024 Blazer EV will likely be all-new, despite the nameplate already being on sale. Chevy declined to comment on future product when approached by MotorTrend about a non-SS Blazer EV (as in, will there be a regular Blazer and an SS?), so we’ll have to wait to find out more.

We can expect the 2024 Blazer EV to likely arrive on parent-company General Motors’ new Ultium vehicle platform system tailored for electric vehicles. It will likely be powered by new Ultium battery cells manufactured in GM’s Lordstown, Ohio battery plant, which GM says are 60 percent more powerful than the cells used in the Chevy Bolt.

The Blazer SS is Chevy’s first performance EV, but it’s not the first under the General Motors umbrella. GM has relaunched Hummer as an all-electric performance brand, and has also announced sportier new Cadillac and Buick EVs already, as well. One of Buick’s announced EV crossovers is said to sit lower and is designed to be sportier, so it’s possible the new Blazer SS has a lot in common with that model. And don’t forget, it’s rumored that the gas-fed Camaro will eventually die and be resurrected as an electric performance sedan.

Along with the video, Chevy announced the full reveal of the Blazer SS EV will take place later this year, and it will go on sale in the spring of 2023.
