2024 Kia Seltos, All you want to know & watch about a Great Car

2024 Kia Seltos

The Kia Seltos (Korean: 기아 셀토스) is a subcompact crossover SUV manufactured by Kia. Introduced in mid-2019, the Seltos is positioned between the smaller Stonic, Soul, or Sonet and the larger Sportage in Kia’s global SUV lineup.

The Seltos is designated as a global product with three variations introduced for different markets. The first variation is the largest version of the Seltos, which is manufactured in South Korea (codename: SP2) mainly aimed for developed markets, including North America and Australasia. The two other variations are the Indian-made Seltos (codename: SP2i) and the closely related Chinese version badged as the Kia KX3 (codename: SP2c).

The SP2i and SP2c models are the low-cost versions of the Seltos to penetrate emerging markets, built on the Hyundai-Kia K2 platform and closely related to the second-generation Hyundai Creta/ix25. Despite being a globally marketed model, the Seltos is not sold in the European market.

The name “Seltos” is derived from “Celtos”, the son of Hercules and Celtine in Greek mythology. According to Kia, the Seltos is aimed directly at millennials and “youthful, tech-savvy buyers” looking for a vehicle that stands out from the crowd.

2024 Kia Seltos First Look

2024 Kia Seltos 4

The 2024 Kia Seltos has been refreshed, and there’s more on the menu than simply the normal exterior tweaks. Under the hood, the 1.6-liter turbo GDI I-4 gets a power bump, and the interior gets an intriguing optional panoramic display that combines the infotainment and dash screens into one large, contemporary-looking unit.

However, it does return with Kia’s continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT, which Kia refers to as the Intelligent Variable Transmission) on some versions, which we’re hopeful will be better than it was for its 2023 model year.

The Kia Seltos is a rather good looking entry-level crossover and builds upon some of the great ideas from its bigger siblings like giving owners lots of features and cargo room. Unfortunately, the 2023 Seltos was held back by its overuse of plastic in the cabin, a jerky CVT, and a four-star crash test rating by the NHTSA.

Strangely enough, its sister vehicle—the Hyundai Kona—managed a five-star rating, and the safety ratings deficit was enough to knock the Seltos down to number four in our list of best Subcompact SUVs (whereas the Kona is rated second, but outside of its safety rating garnered largely the same pros and cons).

The Seltos’ interior and exterior updates certainly look promising. It also gets the X-Line treatment, which is new for 2024. While the standard 2.0-liter returns with that (hopefully improved) CVT, the Gamma 1.6-liter I-4 has been revised to churn out 20 more horsepower, now coming in at 195 hp. It’s mated to a new eight-speed automatic transmission that can be used with the Seltos’ available on-demand AWD.

While the standard dash makes due with a 4.2-inch digital gauge, the optional panoramic display combines the 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster 10.25-inch infotainment screen to create massive display that appears to be a single unit. This along with a new dash trim line gives the Seltos’ interior the a horizontal design theme that echoes with the exterior styling changes.

Other interior features include four USB ports (two up front, two for the rear passengers) while the SX with the Sunroof Package gets a powered liftgate and ventilated front seats as optional interior bits. Owners can also utilize Kia’s optional Kia Connect features like the digital key and OTA functionality updates on the map and infotainment display.

The refresh of the body allowed Kia to implement some new lighting features that tie the front LED projection lights in with the updated grille. That grille also has an available LED lighting treatment—which Kia is calling the “Star Map”—across the majority of its span, just coming short in the center to match the protruding feature of the upper and lower grille trim. The rear tail lights now have a light bar that spans across the full liftgate and features additional lighting for backup lighting.

The lower bumper reflectors also match the new lighting design of the nose. New “geometric shapes are now available on the LS, S, EX and SX trim wheels while a new color, Pluton Blue and seen in these images from Kia, join Fusion Black and Valais Green for 2024. The 2024 Seltos is also the latest vehicle to get an X-Line trim, which adds on exterior upgrades such as a gunmetal finished grille, unique 18-inch wheels, black roof rack, gloss black door garnishes, and “X-Line” badging.

Safety features include Kia’s suite of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) like forward collision warning (with pedestrian and cyclist detection), Intelligent Speed Limit Assist, High Beam Assist, Lane Following Assist, and Kia’s Driver Attention Warning as standard. Expect to hear more about the 2024 Kia Seltos—including pricing—early next year. It’s expected to land in your Kia dealer’s showroom by the first half of 2023.

Overview

With its stylish look, spacious cabin, and fun-to-drive edge, the 2024 Seltos earns its place in Kia’s lineup, which is full of other vehicles with similar values. The Seltos is slots in between the smaller Soul and the larger Sportage, but its slightly-larger-than-subcompact size makes room for more cargo than rivals such as the Hyundai Kona and the Nissan Kicks.

A styling refresh for 2024 makes the Seltos even more attractive than before and its interior has been updated with better infotainment technology too. A duo of four-cylinders is available, including a 195-hp turbocharged engine that provides good pep. Most models come standard with all-wheel drive, and even the base-model Seltos provides good value and utility, making it one of our favorite small SUVs.

What’s New for 2024?

The Seltos has received a refresh for its exterior and interior styling for 2024. A restyled grille and updated lighting elements elevate the SUV’s exterior along with new wheel designs and a rear light bar that connects the taillamps. The cabin receives an updated infotainment panel with two large screens and the current model’s more traditional shift lever appears to have been replaced with a rotary controller.

The Seltos’s optional turbo 1.6-liter four-cylinder now makes 195 horsepower, up 20 hp from last year’s model, and adds a new eight-speed automatic transmission to replace the previous seven-speed unit. A rugged-looking X-Line model also joins the lineup and features unique exterior styling.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

LX
$25,000 (est)
S
$26,000 (est)
EX
$28,000 (est)
X-Line
$29,000 (est)
SX
$30,000 (est)

Despite the styling overhaul, the Seltos will likely remain a fairly affordable option. We expect trim levels to mirror that of the 2023 model, but with slightly higher prices and possibly a reshuffling of options. It is unknown yet whether or not all-wheel drive will remain a standard feature.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Kia offers two different four-cylinder engines in the Seltos: a 2.0-liter that makes 147 horsepower or a turbocharged 1.6-liter that pumps out 195 hp. We sampled the Seltos with the turbocharged 1.6-liter back when it made only 175 horsepower and found its power to be more than adequate.

While the base engine is mated to a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), the turbo comes with an eight-speed automatic. All-wheel drive comes standard on all but the S trim. The Seltos offers a firm but mostly smooth ride, and handling is sharp for an SUV—it’s far more entertaining and composed than rivals such as the Jeep Compass and Mitsubishi Outlander Sport.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

The EPA hasn’t released fuel economy estimates for the 2024 Seltos yet, but we don’t think much will change from last year’s model. The 2023 Seltos’s highway fuel economy was estimated at up to 35 mpg for front-wheel-drive models with the 2.0-liter four-cylinder. On our 75-mph highway fuel-economy test route, an all-wheel-drive Seltos with the turbocharged 1.6-liter managed 30 mpg. For more information about the Seltos’s fuel economy, visit the EPA’s website.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Inside, the Seltos offers noticeably more space for people and cargo than the Hyundai Kona. The materials used throughout the cabin are refined enough to seem right at home in the showroom next to the brand’s excellent Telluride SUV. Interior ambient lighting is standard on the upscale SX model and can be set to pulse along with the music like the system Kia offers in the smaller Soul SUV.

During our test drive of the pre-facelift model, the cargo area easily swallowed our suitcases, backpacks, and photo bag; in our testing, we fit eight carry-on suitcases in the cargo hold and 20 with the rear seats folded. We expect the Seltos’s cargo carrying capability to be unchanged for the 2024 model year.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The Seltos’s infotainment setup has drastically changed for 2024, with a new seamless panel stretching two thirds of the dashboard serving as both a digital gauge display and infotainment touchscreen. This arrangement is optional and similar to the offerings of other modern Kia models. A smaller display with an analog gauge cluster are standard. Kia hasn’t said yet, but we expect to see Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, and an on-board wi-fi hotspot.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

Kia offers a standard suite of driver-assistance tech on the Seltos, but higher-tech features such as adaptive cruise control are optional. For more information about the Seltos’s crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Key safety features include:

  • Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection
  • Standard lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist
  • Available adaptive cruise control with a lane-centering feature

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Kia’s warranty is the best in the industry, and the company continues to offer the 10-year or 100,000-mile powertrain coverage on its models. The only other rivals that can match it are SUVs from sister company Hyundai.

  • Limited warranty covers 5 years or 60,000 miles
  • Powertrain warranty covers 10 years or 100,000 miles
  • No complimentary scheduled maintenance
