5 stars also for Kia, Mercedes and Volkswagen – EuroNCAP
5 stars also for Kia, Mercedes and Vw – EuroNCAP
Euro NCAP has published its third set of safety results for 2022. Like the Volvo C40 we were talking about recently, the K i a EV6, Mercedes C-Class and Volkswagen Multivan get 5 stars. Stellantis’ cousins, Opel/Vauxhall Astra and Peugeot 308 have to settle for 4 stars.
The sixth-generation Opel Astra and the third-generation Peugeot 308 are two models using similar undersides, namely the Stellantis EMP2 platform. Not surprisingly, therefore, they score very similarly in the four assessment areas (protection of adults, protection of children, protection of weak users and driving aids).
In terms of adult protection, tests showed marginal protection against chest injuries for medium-sized drivers, and none of the cars were equipped with a central airbag for side impact protection, an increasingly common measure on modern cars. Both cars offer many collision avoidance technologies, but do not include some of the latest advancements introduced to the market. The 4 stars also concern plug-in hybrid variants.
All 5-star cars in this test series demonstrated excellent collision protection, with scores of 90% or higher, compared to 76% and 80% for Stellantis Group cars. This dispels the idea that the difference between 5 stars and 4 stars is still due to driving aids, although this is often the case.
Cars have also shown good results for the protection of children. The biggest gaps between the Kia EV6, Mercedes C-Class, Volvo C40 Recharge and VW Multivan are in the protection of weak users, where the C-Class, equipped with an active hood, significantly outperforms the EV6.
