Lady Diana
A car that belonged to Lady Diana was sold for 737,000 pounds (869,000 euros) at auction on Saturday. After a fierce battle, the 1985 Ford Escort RS Turbo was won by a Briton and should therefore remain in the country.
Priced at 100,000 pounds, the vehicle finally left for 650,000 pounds, to which must be added fees and VAT. The car was the highlight of a sale organised by Silverstone Auctions, on the Silverstone circuit 120 km north-west of London.
Only 40,000 km on the clock
With its power of 130 horsepower, this Ford is a typical sports version of the “GTI”, popular vitamin cars prized in the 1980s. Copies of this model, with a less illustrious past, can be found in classified ads at some 10,000 pounds.
The Princess of Wales herself drove this car to drive around London, according to the auction house. In excellent condition and with only 40,000 km on the clock, the car was used by Lady Di from 1985 to 1988. Among other things, she transported Prince William.
Unique in its black color – the other Escort RS Turbo of this generation were white – it then changed hands several times before being renovated from top to bottom for sale. In June 2021, another Ford Escort used by Diana, a 1.6 Ghia sedan from 1981, had been sold for 52,000 pounds to a South American bidder.
