Electric cars 2022: models, price, range, charging, battery
What electric cars are sold in France? At what price? For what autonomy? What is the charging time? Auto-Moto takes stock.
At the end of May 2022, the 100% electric automobile in France represents a market share of 11.9%, a significant increase compared to the same period last year, measured at 7.1%. In the first five months of the year, the so-called zero-emission sector for individuals recorded 71,444 registrations, compared to 51,612 from January to May 2021.
This upward curve could continue, depending on whether the maximum bonus at EUR 6000 is maintained, accompanied by an increase in the threshold limit for the purchase price of the vehicle, from EUR 45 000 to EUR 47 000, on 1 July 2022. Find below the sales figures of fully electric vehicles in France over the last five years.
- Year 2022 over 5 months: 71,444 registrations / 11.4% market share
- Year 2021: 162,106 registrations / 9.8% market share
- Year 2020: 110,916 registrations / 6.7% market share
- Year 2019: 42,764 registrations / 1.9% market share
- Year 2018: 31,059 registrations / 1.4% market share
Maximum bonus maintained at 6000 euros until 31 December 2022
At the end of May 2020, the car recovery plan presented by the President of the Republic Emmanuel Macron had increased to 7000 euros the amount of the maximum bonus granted to individuals for the purchase of a 100% electric car. As a reminder, this maximum bonus is intended for the purchase of a model whose price is less than 45,000 euros.
On July 1, 2021, it had returned to its initial threshold, i.e. 6000 euros. A year later, a further reduction of 1000 euros was under consideration, reducing the amount of the maximum bonus to 5000 euros, from 1 July 2022.
But this is ultimately not the case and the bonus for eligible electric cars is maintained, for a period of six additional months, until December 31, 2022. But one change is to be noted: the limit threshold of the purchase price relating to the maximum bonus is raised to 47,000 euros, on July 1, against 45,000 euros until then.
Electric models sold in France
Currently, the electric vehicle market in France includes various models such as the Audi e-tron, the Tesla Model 3, the Kia e-Soul, the DS3 Crossback E-Tense, the Mercedes EQC, the Porsche Taycan and the Renault Zoé. They were followed by the Peugeot e-208 and e-2008, the Opel Corsa-e, the Honda e, the Renault Twingo ZE, the Tesla Model Y and the Volkswagen ID3 in particular.
The arrival of new zero-emission vehicles also affected the quadricycle category with the Citroën Ami in the summer of 2020. Since the end of last year, the electric market has also welcomed the Citroën ë-C4 and many SUVs, Skoda Enyaq, Volkswagen ID4, Lexus UX 300e, Dacia Spring, Ford Mustang Mach-E and Aiways U5, while the large BMW iX arrived in 2021 to compete with the Tesla Model X, just like the Audi Q4 e-tron.
As a hydrogen-powered electric vehicle, the Toyota Mirai sedan has just passed the second generation. Conversely, small models tend to disappear, like the Skoda Citigo e iV, removed from the catalog in December 2020 and recently, the Smart Forfour. For its part, the Dacia Spring is the cheapest electric car on the market, since March 2021.
To date, the 100% electric offer in France totals about sixty models. The Renault-Nissan alliance took the lion’s share a few years ago, but other brands have since invested in the all-electric market. Depending on the manufacturer, the policies differ. Thus, brands like Tesla or BMW have decided to attack the electric market with the “premium” face. On the 100% electric side, as for the hybrid, we also note a growing arrival of SUVs of all brands.
Bonus indexed to the purchase price, how does it work?
The ecological bonus in force in 2020 has been retained in part, with an additional €1,000 purchase aid extended for the first half of 2021. Thus, at most, you could benefit from a bonus of 7,000 euros until June 30, 2021 (see paragraph above). Since July 1st, it is again 6,000 euros (within the limit of 27% of the total price including VAT, including the rental of batteries).
Nevertheless, in view of the conditions of the decree of 30 December 2019, this bonus of 6,000 euros only concerns vehicles whose purchase price is less than 45,000 euros. For those who are displayed between 45,000 and 60,000 euros, the financial boost is set at 2,000 euros since July 1, 2021 (3,000 euros previously).
Finally, for a purchase price of more than 60,000 euros, the vehicle in question is not entitled to any bonus, unless it is a commercial or hydrogen-powered vehicle (2000 euros since 1 July). For two- or three-wheeled electric vehicles and quadricycles, the bonus is maintained at 900 euros.
As a reminder, the ecological bonus concerns a new vehicle emitting 20 g/km of CO2 or less, whether it is a private vehicle, a van, a two-wheeler, a three-wheeler or a motor quadricycle without a lead-acid battery.
Among the conditions necessary to obtain the bonus, those who want the car not to be sold within six months of its acquisition or have traveled less than 6,000 km. For a two-wheeler, a three-wheeler or a quadricycle, this concerns the first year of registration and the threshold of 2,000 km.
Note that the benefits of the 2020 bonus remain valid until March 31, 2021 under conditions. This applies to vehicles ordered in 2020, provided that invoicing occurs by 31 March 2021 at the latest. For leases, the signature must be prior to December 31, 2020 and the payment schedule must begin before March 31, 2021.
What is the best electric car?
The different 100% electric vehicles on the market are not directly comparable, both in terms of the segment concerned and their price/performance positioning. Nevertheless, the Renault Zoé seems to be the most versatile offer, adapted to the main purchasing criteria of most customers.
In addition, its status as a broad leader in electric car sales in France has just been strengthened by the arrival of a more accomplished second generation, with a modernized presentation and rising performance, but a price that is also.
What is the cost to charge an electric car?
The cost of a full energy tank for an electric car is about four times lower than for its thermal equivalence. Obviously, this ratio can vary on a case-by-case basis, in particular depending on the type of vehicle and its batteries, but also on the tariff policy in force at the supplier of the kWh of electricity. According to the website kelwatt.fr, the owner of an electric car, whose consumption is around 15kWh / 100km, pays an average of 10 euros to refuel.
What is the lifespan of an electric car battery?
Over time, the battery undergoes irreversible aging that restricts its capabilities. Generally, the new battery of an electric car has a lifespan of eight to ten years. For a heavy roller, it is necessary to count on an equivalence of about 100,000 km.
Instructions for use of the WLTP cycle
The new WLTP (World harmonized light vehicles test procedure) homologation cycle has entered into force for all new vehicles on the market since 1er September 2018. This procedure gives a more accurate idea of the ranges of electric vehicles in real situations.
Most of the vehicles mentioned in this file have undergone their homologation procedure before this date: the mileage of autonomy mentioned here therefore remains, with some exceptions, that of the old NEDC cycle. The difference in mileage displayed between the old and new procedure is approximately 25%.
