Honda Civic Celebrates Jubilee

Honda Civic Celebrates Jubilee

Selling more than 27.5 million units in 170 countries since the launch of the first model in 1972, the Honda Civic is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

In 1972, the Civic was the first Honda car to be sold in Europe. It will be immediately appreciated for its compact design, sobriety and ease of use. Equipped with a revolutionary Compound Vortex Controlled Combustion (CVCC) engine, the Civic was the first vehicle to comply with the world’s then strictest emissions regulations: the Clean Air Act.

This environmental law, which came into force in 1970 in the United States, set the standard for future emissions targets for the entire global automotive industry.

Notable developments

Over time and generations, the Civic will only evolve. Sometimes discreetly, sometimes by getting noticed, as in 1987 with the advent of the VTEC variable distribution engine, or in 1997 with the launch of the formidable Type R. The Honda Civic will also set an astonishing record for sobriety with an average of 2.8 l/100 km of diesel during a journey of more than 13,000 km through 24 EU countries.

Promise kept

Building on 50 years of heritage, the Civic’s 11th generation combines performance and efficiency with even better levels of interior comfort, visual appeal and ergonomics. This latest version marks an important milestone for the brand in Europe, as it is the last model in the Honda range to be electrified, delivering on Honda Motor Europe’s commitment to electrify all consumer models by 2022.
