Hyundai electrifies its sports label N
The Korean manufacturer has just unveiled two concepts that announce a new evolution in the electrification of Hyundai: after the family electrics, there will be sports electrics.
Hyundai electrifies
Hyundai stamped “N” are remarkable bombs, which can really claim the qualifier “sporty”. With an already more than honorable success for its Ioniq electric cars, especially the Ioniq 5, the manufacturer has decided to take the next step, injecting even more emotion and passion into the world of electromobility. This is evidenced by two concepts that have not failed to interest us.
RN22e
First of all, there is the RN22e, which is none other than an over-boosted version of the Ioniq 6, presented last week and which will arrive in dealerships before the end of the year. Sleek and aerodynamic, the model is indeed a good starting point for a sports car. Hyundai announces a total power of 585 hp and a torque of 740 Nm, as well as more than 250 km/h in peak.
But power is not the only argument of a sports car, we also learn that the weight is significantly reduced compared to that of the Ioniq 6, thanks to many parts made in 3D printing. And for the fun touch, the manufacturer says it has developed a frankly evocative sound, and integrated into the car a function that simulates the jerks of gear changes in acceleration.
N Vision 74
But we, it is rather for this one that we fell for. Firstly because its look is directly inspired by the Hyundai Pony Coupé of 1974, whose design was signed by the Italian Master Giugiaro. We find the reinterpretation of this design frankly successful. And beyond the aesthetics, there is the technique. Because while the RN22e is a conventional battery electric, the N Vision 74 is the first to bring another technology towards sportiness: the fuel cell.
This is indeed a “hydrogen” electric car, a solution dear to Hyundai, and often presented as more viable than simple batteries, because of the ease of refueling. With its 62.4 kWh battery, its 85 kW fuel cell and 4.2 kg of hydrogen tanks, the N Vision 74 claims nice figures: 680 hp, 900 Nm, 250 km/h in peak, and 600 km of autonomy.
At present, these two vehicles are mainly rolling laboratories. And if we imagine that an Ioniq 6 N will be marketed one day, it is unfortunately less safe for the “modern Pony”. Anyway, the first hyundai electric sports is scheduled for 2023: it will be the Ioniq 5 N.
