Lexus Unveils 5th Generation RX

Lexus Unveils 5th Generation RX

In Europe, the new RX comes in three different electrified engines, from the entry-level hybrid to the high-performance hybrid variant with Direct 4 motive power control, as well as an all-new plug-in hybrid version.

The new RX is built on the GA-K platform, the same as that of the NX, but with a different configuration (extended wheelbase, wider front and rear tracks of 15 and 50 mm and additional reinforcements). This new platform has reduced the weight of the RX by 90 kg and reduced its total height by 10 mm, resulting in a 15 mm lowering of the centre of gravity.

RX 450h+: the first RX plug-in hybrid

The RX 450h+ is equipped with a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder, an 18.1 kWh lithium-ion battery and a rear-mounted electric motor for permanent all-wheel drive. The set delivers 306 hp and ensures acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7 s. Estimated CO2 emissions are expected to be less than 26 g/km (WLTP combined cycle), which corresponds to fuel consumption of less than 1.2 l/100 km. In all-electric mode, up to 135 km/h, Lexus announces a range of 65 km.

High-performance hybrid

The new RX 500h is Lexus’ first-ever turbocharged hybrid, specifically designed for customers with electrified performance. Its power is provided by an all-new hybrid architecture consisting of a 2.4-liter turbo petrol engine with 371 hp, and a 6-speed automatic transmission. The rear axle incorporates an 80 kW electric motor. The RX 500h also features a rear-wheel steering system for more handling, dynamism and stability. The new RX 350h is equipped with a 2.5-liter petrol engine providing 245 hp, combined with an electric motor. The set allows acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.0 s, performance comparable to that of the current RX 450h, but with less emissions. The RX 350h is emerging as an alternative to the low-displacement diesel competitors.

More comfort and practicality

The interior is a minimalist space, but intuitive and thoughtful. One of the highlights of the new RX is the availability of a synthetic leather interior, created in response to the growing demand from vegan or environmentally conscious consumers. The RX comes standard with a 14-inch touchscreen, one of the largest in its class. It is flanked by additional buttons for intuitive access to the most frequently used functions. The new multimedia system includes the intelligent voice assistant “Hey Lexus” that answers questions and commands. Easy integration of smartphones is also planned as standard, wireless for Apple CarPlay but unfortunately not for Android Auto.

The new Lexus RX will be launched in December.
