Nissan Juke Hybrid test: As talented as its cousin

CAR We just drove Nissan’s first hybrid, which belatedly adopted the concept. As it is to improve it, we applaud with both hands.

 

First observation: Nissan and Renault, pioneers of the 100% electric car, came without hurry to the car which is only partially electric. Logic: Toyota, which has the paternity of hybridization, is about to do the opposite… The juke’s new hybrid powertrain is the result of a joint achievement by Renault and Nissan. The diamond brand provides the multimodal gearbox, the 15 kW high-voltage alternator-starter (generator) and the 1.2 kWh water-cooled battery, and the Japanese firm, the 94 hp naturally aspirated 4-cylinder and the 49 hp electric motor. This series/parallel hybrid hitch always starts in fully electric mode, a mode that ensures 80% of the progression in the city.

To tell you the truth, we have already tried the Renault/Nissan hybrid system on the e-Tech 145 versions of the Clio, Captur and Arkana, Renaults marketed before our Juke Hybrid. The originality of this hybrid system common to all these models comes less from the 1.6-liter engine than from the multimodal gearbox (with 4-speed crabots + 2 electric gears) and its management combined with those of the generator and the electric motor. Despite the deficit of gears (4+2) on paper, accelerations and decelerations operate with zero jerks and zero slips.

Eco-friendly efficiency and driving pleasure

The gearbox is therefore bluffing efficiency, soft, responsive, linear … On the other hand, in comparison with the Juke DIG-T 114 (1.0 liter turbo), our Juke Hybrid 145 loses a little extension: the 4-cylinder hybrid makes 15 km/h in top speed to the small 3-cylinder turbo. But it is rounder in acceleration and recovery. Not to mention the conso which is established between 5 and 6 liters in real life.

Compared to the thermal model, the hybrid’s body is more aerodynamic, with improved airflow under the shield and reduced drag with a reprofiled rear spoiler. The top of the grille features a glossy black material that is supposed to indicate the degree of electrification of the vehicle. The Juke Hybrid features new 17-inch two-tone alloy wheels and a 19-inch design inspired by those of the Ariya. As is often the case, the choice of large wheels – mounted on wide tires with low sidewalls – accentuates the resonance of the ride and the firmness of the contact with the road.

Inside, a new set of dials welcomes a power gauge, a hand indicating regenerative charge and an indicator of the battery charge level. This mix of analog hands and digital displays is very useful and just as readable. The trunk space (354 l) is 68 liters down compared to the 1.0-liter Juke turbo petrol, to accommodate the 1.2 kWh battery. However, Nissan says it’s still top of its class when the rear seats are folded down, at 1237 liters. Not to mention that knee space is maintained at the back. So many details that count for a nice hybrid that must meet an exponential demand!
