Volkswagen: a special series of the Golf to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the “R”

20 years ago, Volkswagen unveiled one of the world’s sportiest compact models, the Golf R32. To celebrate this event, the manufacturer is launching a special “20 Years” series

With its 3.2-liter VR6 engine developing 241 hp, the R32 was the most powerful Golf Volkswagen has ever built. Equipped with all-wheel drive combined with exclusive design and equipment, this highly dynamic car was the technological reference in its class. The Golf R32 was an immediate success and its sales were three times higher than originally planned. More than 260,000 R models have been sold worldwide to date.

With its 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine developing 333 hp, the Golf R “20 Years” delivers 13 hp more than the current Golf R. It is therefore the most powerful Golf of all time. The power of the Golf R “20 Years” is highlighted from the start of the engine. The driver can select an “Emotion Start” to activate an “accelerated idle” up to 2,500 rpm, in combination with worked acoustics.

The neighbors will definitely love it! In addition, when the driver shifts gears manually in the S and S+ positions of the gear selector, the DSG transmission provides a perceptible feedback from the transmission, just as the optimized engine setting means that the response to the accelerator is extremely spontaneous. To do this, the turbocharger is preloaded in order to be maintained at a constant speed during part-load driving.

The Golf R “20 Years” will be available as standard with the already known R Performance package of the Golf 8 R (including, among others, R-Performance Torque Vectoring in combination with the Vehicle Dynamics Manager and two additional driving modes, Special and Drift).

Externally, the special edition can be recognized by its specific roof spoiler as well as its 19-inch Estoril wheels. Inside, the dashboard and door trim are lined with real carbon – a first for a Volkswagen. Visual accents are also created by the blue R logos, especially on the multifunction sports steering wheel.

Volkswagen will offer the Golf R “20 Years” until mid-2023.
