Volkswagen Amarok: Thank you Ford!
If Volkswagen’s new pickup retains the same name as its predecessor, it is actually a rebodied Ford Ranger.
It’s an exchange of good processes: the new Amarok is based on the Ford Ranger while the new Ford Tourneo Connect is nothing more than a revised Volkswagen Caddy. Pickups, however, assert their personality more, since only the doors are common to both brands.
Compared to the previous model, the Amarok has grown slightly (+ 96 mm, or 5.35 m), as well as it rests on a wheelbase of 3.27 m (+ 173 mm). The spaciousness should therefore benefit, especially at the rear. In addition, as overhangs are reduced, crossing capabilities should be better. The ford depth is also clearly increasing: it goes from 500 to 800 mm. Another positive development is that the payload increases by 160 kg to 1.16 tonnes.
Under the hood, the Volkswagen Amarok will only offer diesel engines. A 2-liter 4-cylinder with 150, 170 or 204 hp, and a 3-liter V6 with 241 hp. It will also take over the Ranger’s 10-speed auto gearbox, but 6-speed transmissions (automatic and manual) will also be on the program for the less powerful engines. Depending on the model, the all-wheel drive will be permanent or to be switched on manually.
Four levels of equipment are planned. The entry-level is already very well equipped with LED lighting, electrically folding mirrors, digital instrumentation, infotainment with 10-inch touch screen, adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, lane keeping assistant, reversing radar and parking cameras.
The new Volkswagen Amarok will be unveiled to the public at the Commercial Vehicle Show in Hannover next September. Its commercialization is scheduled for the end of the year. No price has yet been communicated.
